天主教徒参加弥撒的比例头一回降到了 50%以下。
教士、修女和修士的数量比十年前减少了 20%,在俗人员则减少了 60%。
最后一组统计数字尤其重要。天主教会目前是“美国社会中最大的道德权威团体”。(这是基督教新教神学家彼得 伯杰[Peter Berger]最近给它戴上的头衔。)
然而,在 24000 名影响很大的高级管理人员应《美国新闻与世界报道》之请,对主要机构之社会影响作出的评价中,天主教会和其他有组织的教会毫无希望地落在最后一位上。(见下页表中所示。)
显然,天主教会的道德权威地位没有得到很好的宣传。
